This Month's Feature

Criminal Justice

Westat researchers study crime, victimization, and prison populations with innovative strategies to address sensitive issues.

On Probation and Parole: What Are the Numbers?

At the end of 2010, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that more than 4.1 million adult men and women were on probation in the United States and more than 840,000 were on parole or mandatory conditional release following a prison term. What are the numbers today? Westat will now gather the hard statistics about those under correctional supervision in the community.

Surveying Victims: Can IVR Ease the Burden?

Rape, robbery, assault. Each year the National Crime Victimization Survey asks victims to describe the impact of these crimes and characteristics of violent offenders. Since respondents may be reluctant to report a crime to an interviewer, interactive voice response (IVR) could reduce respondents’ reluctance to report and provide greater accuracy.

Helping Campuses Be Compliant on Safety and Security Reporting

Westat has literally written the book on how colleges can meet Federal laws on disclosing campus crime statistics and security-related information. From state and local law enforcement interaction, emergency evacuation and notification procedures, to missing person issues, we can guide campuses on meeting reporting requirements.
